Reasons for Business Valuations

There are many reasons why someone may require a business valuation. Examples include:

  • Tax planning purposes including estate freezes to pass wealth on to future generations and corporate reorganizations
  • Purchase or sale of a business
  • Shareholder buyout
  • Annual valuations as part of an unanimous shareholders agreement or employee share ownership plan
  • Shareholder or partnership disputes
  • Matrimonial disputes

Valuation Reports

Per the practice standards of the CICBV, there are three different levels of independent valuation reports:

  1. Calculation
  2. Estimate
  3. Comprehensive

The level of reports differ in the scope of review and disclosure provided, but also by the level of assurance provided by the conclusion. The Calculation level provides the lowest level of assurance and a Comprehensive report provides the highest level of assurance.

At Hawryluk Valuations, Crystal takes the time to discuss the differences between the report levels at the onset. The level of report that is appropriate for the situation is discussed and agreed upon by Crystal and the client. Factors which are considered include the purpose for which the valuation is needed, the availability of information, and the client's need for assurance.
